Kanika Dhillon opens up about fighting sexism in Bollywood
What's the story
Acclaimed writer-producer Kanika Dhillon, known for her successful OTT ventures like the Haseen Dillruba series and Do Patti (2024), is now eyeing big-screen productions.
In a recent interview with Mid-Day, she revealed, "My next after Gandhari will be a theatrical offering."
"As a writer, I have done big-screen films like Kedarnath [2018] and Dunki [2023]; now, as a producer, the big screen is the dream."
Industry challenges
'Before I get thumbs up, I've to cross a 'No'
Dhillon also spoke about the sexism she has encountered in her 18-year career.
She remembered how the announcement of Gandhari raised questions about how she and Pannu would tackle a male-dominated genre.
"First, they used to say pulp doesn't work; then they said women don't write pulp."
"Today I am called for panels and they say, 'You have created an only-pulp franchise.' Before I get a thumbs up, I always have to cross a 'No.'"
Upcoming venture
Dhillon's upcoming project: A 'drama pro max'
While Dhillon stayed tight-lipped about the details of her next project, she teased it would be a "drama pro max."
This indicates a change in genre for the writer-producer, who is currently working on an action film titled Gandhari.
The film, directed by Devashish Makhija and featuring Taapsee Pannu, revolves around a mother's quest to save her child.
New venture
Dhillon's excitement for the action genre and collaboration with Pannu
Dhillon was excited to explore the action genre with Gandhari.
She said, "I love action films. Taapsee, at one point, was keen to do action. Our stars usually align."
"When you start something new, you need someone to take that leap of faith with you."
In Pannu, she has found a collaborator who shares her storytelling passion.
