Kangana accuses 'IC 814' of twisting facts—claims censorship is 'unfair'
Bollywood actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has criticized the creators of the web series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack for allegedly distorting facts. The Netflix show, which is based on the real-life 1999 hijacking incident, has sparked controversy for portraying the hijackers with Hindu names. This has led to accusations of factual distortion and misleading the audience. Ranaut expressed her disappointment over this issue on X/Twitter on Monday.
Ranaut accused show creators of having 'politically motivated sinister motives'
Ranaut took to her X account to respond to a post about IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. She accused the show's creators of distorting real-life events to fit their "politically motivated sinister motives." The actor also expressed frustration over the censorship faced by filmmakers who aim to depict historical facts. To note, IC 814—helmed by Anubhav Sinha—stars Vijay Varma, Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Patralekhaa, Dia Mirza, and Arvind Swamy. It was released on Netflix on August 29.
'Censorship is only for some of us': Ranaut
Further, Ranaut wrote on X, "Law of the land is that one can show unimaginable amount of violence and nudity on OTT platforms without any consequence or censorship, one can even distort real-life events to suit their politically motivated sinister motives." She added, "It seems censorship is only for some of us who don't want tukde of this nation and make films on historic facts."

'IC 814' under fire for changing hijackers' names
IC 814 has come under fire for portraying the hijackers with Hindu names - 'Bhola' and 'Shankar.' In reality, the five hijackers involved in the 1999 incident were identified as Ibrahim Athar, Shahid Akhtar Sayed, Sunny Ahmed Qazi, Zahoor Mistry, and Shakir. These individuals were members of a Pakistan-based terrorist organization. This discrepancy has led to criticism and accusations of misleading the audience.
Netflix India head was summoned over the row
Soon after Ranaut's tweet, reports came up suggesting things were getting more serious for IC 814 makers. The Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry has summoned Monika Shergill, the content head of Netflix India, over the controversy. More details are expected to come.
