Film synopsis
'Emergency' explores a significant period in Indian history
In Emergency, Ranaut plays the role of Gandhi. The film explores the controversial Emergency period imposed by Gandhi between 1975 and 1977.
Apart from acting in the film, Ranaut also directed it.
The film's cast features Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Milind Soman, and late actor Satish Kaushik.
Despite the controversies, Emergency remains one of Ranaut's most ambitious projects.
Controversy
'Emergency' faced release delays and protests
The film's release was marred by delays, censor issues, and protests from Sikh bodies over alleged misrepresentation of facts.
In August last year, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) sent a legal notice to the producers of Emergency.
They claimed that the film "misrepresented" the character and history of Sikhs and demanded the removal of scenes depicting "anti-Sikh" sentiments.
These protests caused the film's release to be postponed from September to January.
