Kangana Ranaut agrees to CBFC's cuts in 'Emergency'
Actor-politician Kangana Ranaut has reportedly given a thumbs-up to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC)'s suggested edits in her directorial venture, Emergency. This update came to light during a Bombay High Court hearing on Monday. The court was addressing a petition filed by Zee Entertainment Enterprises, the film's co-producers, who are seeking the release of the censor certificate for the movie.
'The matter is now between her and the censor board'
While addressing the bench of Justices Burgess Colabawalla and Firdosh Pooniwalla, senior advocate Sharan Jagtiani appearing for Zee Studios revealed that Ranaut had met with the censor board and agreed to the cuts suggested by the CBFC's revising committee. "She has said that the matter is now between her and the censor board," the counsel noted, per Live Law, adding time would be needed to decide how the changes are to be carried out.
CBFC requested 13 cuts in 'Emergency'
The CBFC has suggested a whopping 13 cuts in Ranaut's upcoming film, Emergency, where she plays the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. But it was a mystery if she was on board with all those changes. The film, which Ranaut has both directed and co-produced, also stars Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Mahima Chaudhry, and Milind Soman in important roles. It revolves around the infamous Emergency that Gandhi imposed back in 1975.
'Emergency' release delayed due to historical inaccuracies
The release of Emergency, which was supposed to hit theaters on September 6, is now pushed back due to accusations of historical inaccuracies and misrepresentation of the Sikh community. Earlier this month, the court directed the CBFC to make the final call regarding the film's rating. Justice BP Colabawalla pointed out that Ranaut's production isn't a documentary and questioned whether it could sway public opinion.
Court urged CBFC to take a stand on 'Emergency'
The court stressed that the CBFC should take a firm stand on the release of Emergency. "Take a decision. Let's see what the revising committee says, be it deciding to release or not, take a decision. Have the courage to say that the film should not be released. We will appreciate the stand of the CBFC," it stated. The matter has now been scheduled for further hearing on Thursday (October 3).
Ranaut's response to CBFC's suggestions for 'Emergency'
Last week, Ranaut voiced her opinion on the cuts suggested by the CBFC for the film, Emergency, calling some of them "quite unreasonable." But despite that, she stressed her commitment to defending the film's integrity. "We've received requests for cuts, but while feedback is always welcome, some of the suggestions seem quite unreasonable... Nevertheless, we are ready to stand our ground and protect the film's integrity," she said.
