Lionsgate announces new 'John Wick' TV series
Lionsgate is broadening its John Wick universe with a fresh action series titled John Wick: Under The High Table. The new series, set to commence directly after the conclusion of John Wick: Chapter 4, will be executive produced by the film franchise's star, Keanu Reeves, and director, Chad Stahelski. Robert Levine, co-creator of The Old Man, has been tasked with writing the script.
'John Wick: Under the High Table' plot details revealed
According to Deadline, John Wick: Under The High Table will explore the power vacuum left in the world of the High Table by John Wick. The series will introduce a host of new characters aiming to establish their presence, while familiar faces from the franchise remain loyal to the old-world order. Lionsgate says the series aims to "combine new and old and thrust the Wick universe into a new age," suggesting a blend of fresh and existing characters.
Stahelski and Levine to helm 'John Wick' TV series
Stahelski, who previously signed a deal with Lionsgate to oversee the creative aspects of the John Wick franchise across various media, will direct the pilot episode of John Wick: Under The High Table. He will also executive produce the series through his company, 87Eleven Entertainment. Levine is set to serve as showrunner and will join Reeves in executive producing duties.
Reeves to executive produce, not act in new series
Reeves is currently attached to John Wick: Under The High Table as an executive producer, with no acting component involved. However, he is reported to be very hands-on with the project. Thunder Road's Erica Lee and Basil Iwanyk, who were producers on the movies, will also join the executive production team for this new series.
'John Wick 4' ending sets stage for new series
In John Wick 4, John, played by Reeves, kills the High Table's Marquis, portrayed by Bill Skarsgard, and is left severely injured. The film concludes on an ambiguous note. A post-credits scene teases a showdown between Caine (Donnie Yen) and Akira (Rina Sawayama), potentially hinting at a spinoff movie about Yen's assassin character Caine, which is currently in development at Lionsgate.
Lionsgate continues to expand 'John Wick' universe
In addition to the new series, Lionsgate is also developing a spinoff film titled Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas, which is set between the third and fourth John Wick movies. A fifth installment of the John Wick film franchise is also in development. The production of John Wick: Under The High Table will not interfere with plans for this potential new feature installment.
