Buzz: John Lithgow might play Dumbledore in 'Harry Potter' series

Six-time Emmy winner John Lithgow is said to be in advanced talks to play Professor Albus Dumbledore in HBO's upcoming series adaptation of the Harry Potter books, reported Deadline.
The network has not confirmed the casting news yet. In a statement, they said, "We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation."
"As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals."
Character history
Dumbledore's character and previous portrayals
Dumbledore is a powerful wizard, the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and the leader of the Order of the Phoenix in their battle against dark wizard Lord Voldemort.
The character was brought to life in the Harry Potter film franchise by actors Richard Harris, Michael Gambon, and Jude Law.
Despite being American, Lithgow has previously played British characters including Winston Churchill on The Crown and Roald Dahl on stage in London.

HBO's 'Harry Potter' series: A decade-long journey
The Harry Potter series will span over a decade under the guidance of writer/showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director/executive producer Mark Mylod.
Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, described the show as a "faithful adaptation" of JK Rowling's novels that will "dive deep into each of the iconic books."
The network also said this adaptation will introduce a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom.

'Harry Potter' series filming and release details
The Harry Potter TV series will be filmed at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden—where the original movies were shot.
The show is expected to premiere on HBO in late 2026 or early 2027.
Names such as Paapa Essiedu, Sharon Horgan, Lesley Manville, Brett Goldstein, and Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy have been rumored for different roles.
An open casting call for kids aged between 9-11 years was also launched in 2024 to cast the lead roles of Harry, Hermione, and Ron.
