Alia Bhatt's 'Jigra': Remake or original
The upcoming film Jigra, directed by Vasan Bala, has been under the spotlight for alleged similarities to Mahesh Bhatt's 1993 movie Gumrah. However, a source close to the project dismissed these rumors, stating that the two films share no resemblance apart from being prison-break stories. The source also emphasized Bala's reputation for originality, citing his previous works Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota and Monica O My Darling.
Why does this story matter?
On Monday, a report by Bollywood Hungama quoted a source revealing that Jigra is an adaptation of Gumrah, which originally featured Sanjay Dutt, Sridevi, and Rahul Roy. The original plot centered around a man who goes to extreme lengths to rescue his lover imprisoned abroad. The source explained, "The makers of Jigra decided to remake Gumrah with certain modifications. Two major changes are that the girl saves the boy, and instead of lovers, they are siblings."
Bhatt admits 'Gumrah' was 'lifted from Bangkok Hilton'
Per Times Now, Mahesh Bhatt has openly admitted that Gumrah was taken from the Australian miniseries Bangkok Hilton. He described this period of his career as one marked by carelessness and laziness. Despite his opportunity to direct the late Sridevi in Gumrah, the filmmaker expressed no pride in the film due to its lack of originality. He also reportedly emphasized that Jigra is a completely different entity.
