IMDb's top Indian movie of 2018 is Ayushmann Khurrana's 'Andhadhun'
IMDb, for those unaware, is a leading global movie website, which announced the list of Top 10 Indian Movies of 2018, yesterday. Col Needham, the founder and CEO of IMDb, came to India for the occasion and made the announcement. And guess which film topped the list? Ayushmann Khurrana's Andhadhun. While that was unsurprising, read to know about the others who got ranked.
The entire ranking list is determined by online users
Before looking at the list itself, let us understand how the ranking for the list works. Viewers can rank the films and TV shows on a scale of 10. In order to rate a title, they have to click on the 'Rate This' star on IMDb's title page of any film or TV show. Thus, the entire ranking is determined by online users.
The film won both critical and commercial acclaim
Khurrana-starrer Andhadhun, directed by Sriram Raghavan and co-starring Tabu, Radhika Apte, among others, won critical and commercial acclaim. The thriller about a blind pianist kept audiences on the edge and it topping the list was quite expected. Notably, we praised Andhadhun heartily in our review as well, pointing out the cinematic and narrative genius of Raghavan aided by the smart usage of music.
Akshay's 'PadMan' came 6th, defeating 'Sanju', 'Raazi' and 'Stree'
Khurrana's good luck continues, as another film of his, Badhaai Ho, is on the 5th position. Other films include Stree, Raazi and Sanju that landed the 8th, 9th and 10th spots on the list, respectively. Notably, Akshay Kumar-starrer PadMan, with its strong message on menstrual hygiene, came 6th. Regional films like Ratsasan, 96, Mahanati and Rangasthalam bagged second, third, fourth and seventh spots, respectively.
The list shows viewers embracing diverse Indian films worldwide
Needham, while announcing the list, said he was pleased to know these films "resonated most strongly with our customers." He's on his first visit to India. A good sign for Indian cinema is that Tamil and Telugu movies have made the top 10 list, which is usually dominated by Bollywood, proving that Indian films in various languages are being embraced by IMDb customers, worldwide.
