Emily Blunt channels iconic female directors in 'The Fall Guy'
What's the story
In The Fall Guy, released in Indian theaters on Friday, Oscar nominee Emily Blunt embodies Jody Moreno, an ambitious film director character.
And, while crafting her look for the film, costume designer Sarah Evelyn took inspiration from several legendary female Hollywood directors.
Evelyn began crafting Moreno's look even before Blunt was officially cast. She took bits and pieces from renowned female directors like Kathryn Bigelow, Patty Jenkins, and Greta Gerwig, as well as fashion trends from the '80s.
Wardrobe collaboration
Blunt's input and final look of Jody Moreno
Once Blunt joined the project, she contributed her ideas to the first-time director character's wardrobe.
Evelyn noted that Blunt was "really well researched and is costume-forward."
She took into account director Agnes Varda, model and actor Lauren Hutton, and even actor Brooke Shields.
The final look for Moreno became a blend of influences from various personalities, including those on The Fall Guy set.
Costume design
Crafting timeless costumes for 'The Fall Guy'
To create timeless costumes, Evelyn sourced vintage clothing from local Los Angeles stores. She also utilized workwear from brands like Wrangler and CAT, which she would then age, modify, and dye to add depth.
Moreno's standout pink jumpsuit is a Wrangler piece paired with a Hawaiian shirt, a leather belt, and Red Wing work boots.
Evelyn confessed that this particular look "came from my heart."

Local designers and significant costume pieces in 'The Fall Guy'
Moreno's subtle jewelry was designed by Los Angeles-based designers Mara Scalise and Olivia Hailey.
The film features Ryan Gosling as Colt Seavers, a seasoned stuntman who gets embroiled in a murder plot while trying to impress Moreno.
Another key costume piece is Colt's "Miami Vice Stunt Team" jacket, a tribute to the film's director David Leitch.
Evelyn worked closely with Gosling and his stylist to ensure the jacket was unique and not too similar to Gosling's attire in Drive (2011).
