#ComicBytes: Spider-Man facts that only long-time fans would know
The web-slinging, fun-loving teen who never thinks twice before doing the right thing, Spider-Man is one of the greatest superheroes of all time. He was bitten by a radioactive spider and ever since, has been the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, who does whatever a spider can. His origin and motivations have been featured in multiple movies but here are some facts not many people know.
His inspiration was a housefly, idea not liked initially
It was the year 1961 and Stan Lee was in search for Marvel's next great storyline after Fantastic Four. A fly came in and sat on a wall in front of him. He got an idea that the next hero should be someone who could stick on vertical surfaces. Thus, Spidey was conceptualized. Notably, Marvel head Martin Goodman did not like it much initially.
Spider-Man has had some bizarre incarnations
Marvel comics adhere to the concept of a multiverse (multiple universes coexisting simultaneously) where things work differently. These universes have their own iterations of superheroes and Spider-Man's versions go from unusual (Gwen Stacy, Deadpool, Doctor Octopus) to downright bizarre! Some of these include Spider-Ham, who's a pig; a zombie Spider-Man; Peter Parquagh, a spy apprentice, Spider-Man J, the manga version; and an actual man-spider.
Not a wallflower! Spidey has dated a lot of women
His most commonly known girlfriends are the on-again-off-again Mary-Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy, who met a tragic end in one storyline. Peter has, at different points in time, dated Liz Allen (high-school), Betty Brant (Daily Bugle) and Felicia Hardy aka the Black Cat. The list goes on. There was Debra Whitman, Marcy Kane Cissy Ironwood, Carlie Cooper, Kitty Pryde, and even Captain Marvel.
As per Captain America, Peter will be the greatest hero
He once took a bullet without hesitation in the Ultimate Marvel Universe, compelling Captain America to say Peter will be the greatest hero. Did you know that Spider-Man has been a part of the Fantastic Four and the Avengers? He has also worked with the X-Men and the Outlaws. He has also died thrice but was brought back because fans couldn't see him go.
