Batman is, undoubtedly, one of the most popular and well-loved comic characters. The dark brooding vigilante, with an all too human side, is extremely relatable and his Bruce Wayne persona inspires readers with philanthropy and immense wealth. However, for the degree of Batman's popularity, there are many facts about the character that readers do not know. Here are 5 unknown facts about Batman.
Batman is defined by what he does
Bruce Wayne is the millionaire masked vigilante Batman. However, what is interesting is the source of this famous character's name. His first name was a homage to King Bruce I, the Scottish King who led the wars of independence. His surname is inspired by Brigadier General Anthony Wayne, an American revolutionary war hero. The name shows how the creators had envisioned Batman's character arc.
A sense of inspiring fear
In the DC Universe, there are multiple lanterns which select people based on their qualities. The Yellow Lantern works on fear and when it had to select a ring bearer from Earth, Batman was chosen. He could have become the Yellow Lantern but eventually refused. However, this incident goes to show the amount of fear the Batman inspires in the heart of criminals.
Robin was killed by the Joker, and Batman fans
Jason Todd, as Robin, died in the hands of the Joker and it was a dark moment in Batman's life. What people might not know, is that Jason's death was decided by a fan vote. They called up the designated phone numbers and the tally stood at 5,343 to 5,271 in favor of Jason dying. Thus his fate was sealed by this controversial poll.
He comes in colors everywhere, he's like a rainbow
Batman is famous for his dark cape and suit, but the earlier comics had the vigilante in some questionable attire. In his earlier days, Batman had seven suits reflecting the colors of the rainbow and he put on a different suit each day. While a bright suited Batman would appear humorous, he did it to distract attackers from easily targeting his sidekick, Robin.
The brains behind the Batman
Most comic book fans know Bob Kane as Batman's creator. However, most of the major character aspects, suit design, back-story and that he does not have superpowers were introduced by fellow artist Bill Finger. Notably, Finger was also the brains behind Catwoman, the Joker, the Batmobile and Gotham City. However, he was only acknowledged posthumously while Kane took most of the credit and money.
