Harvey Weinstein plans to sue NYC over 'medical negligence': Report
Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, who was recently diagnosed with cancer, is planning to sue New York City over "ongoing medical negligence," New York Post reported. The 72-year-old plans to file a lawsuit against NYC Health and Hospitals and Bellevue Hospital. His team claims that the city's refusal to provide him with continuous treatment at Bellevue could affect his ability to attend his upcoming trials.
Weinstein's representative expressed outrage over the alleged negligence
A rep for Weinstein expressed their outrage, saying, "We are appalled by the ongoing medical negligence shown by NYC Health and Hospitals and Bellevue." The rep explained that their problem wasn't with Rikers, CHS (the city jail system's Correction Health Services), or the Bellevue doctors. They stressed that denying to keep him at Bellevue during his trial is a major oversight, risking his retrial.
Weinstein's health complications and legal battles
Weinstein has been undergoing treatment at Rikers Island Jail, where he has encountered several health problems. He is reportedly suffering from chronic myeloid leukemia, however, the prognosis of his cancer is still unknown. Once a top producer in Hollywood—Weinstein's fall from grace was defined by the #MeToo movement as dozens of women accused him of sexual assault. He was convicted in 2020 of a first-degree criminal sexual act and third-degree rape but his conviction was overturned on appeal in April.
Weinstein's ongoing legal proceedings and charges
Weinstein is being retried on the overturned charges in April. He remains behind bars as he appeals a separate 2022 conviction in New York for three sexual assault charges, which earned him a 16-year prison sentence. Recently, he was charged in another case with a first-degree criminal sex act after prosecutors alleged that he forcibly performed oral sex on a woman between April 29, 2006, and May 6 of that year. To all these charges, Weinstein has pleaded not guilty.
