'Worst few days': Sophie Turner on split from Joe Jonas
Sophie Turner has spoken up for the first time after her ugly, highly publicized split from husband-singer Joe Jonas. Talking to British Vogue, Turner opened up about the failure of her marriage, describing the time as the "worst few days of my life." However, the actor is undeterred and added that this is the "happiest" she has been "in a really long time." The couple, who have two young daughters together, divorced last year after four years of marriage.
Turner struggled with separation from children amid filming
Turner was filming for her series Joan at the time of the split while also combating a flurry of negative press. She expressed her distress at being unable to reach her children in the US, stating, "I remember I was on set, I was contracted to be on set for another two weeks, so I couldn't leave." "My kids were in the US and I couldn't get to them because I had to finish Joan."
Turner on 'mom guilt' and negative media coverage
She added, "It hurt because I really do completely torture myself over every move I make as a mother - mom guilt is so real!" Despite presenting a united front during their breakup announcement, unflattering coverage continued when photos from the wrap party of Joan went public. Turner expressed her frustration saying, "A picture might tell a thousand words, but it's not my story." Earlier, several sources from Jonas's side presented her as a "party person," portraying her negatively.
How negative articles impacted her mental health
Expressing how her life was uprooted within days, she added, "I mean, it's unfathomable the amount of people that will just make s**t up and put it up based on a picture." "It felt like I was watching a movie of my life that I hadn't written, hadn't produced, or starred in. It was shocking. I'm still in shock." "I just kept having to say to myself, 'None of this is true.'"
'We were always called wives'
Turner also spoke about how misogyny played out in her relationship with the singer. Speaking about her former sisters-in-law Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Danielle Jonas, she said, "We were always called the wives, and I hated that." "It was kind of this plus-one feeling. And that's nothing to do with him - in no way did he make me feel that - it was just that the perception of us was as the groupies in the band," she said.
Taylor Swift provided safe space for Turner during divorce
In the midst of her divorce and custody battle with Jonas, Turner found support from pop icon Taylor Swift. Turner said, "Taylor was an absolute hero to me this year. I've never been more grateful to anyone than I am for her because she took my children and me and provided us with a home and a safe space. She really has a heart of gold." Notably, several years before Turner-Jonas married, he briefly dated Swift.
Turner finally found support and happiness post-divorce
Turner found emotional support from the team of Joan, who she referred to as her "family." Since then, she has relocated back to her native UK with her children and has stopped taking medication for depression. She credits this improvement to having a community and support system, stating, "Now that I'm back home, I'm actually the happiest I've been in a really long time. I'm starting over again, rediscovering what I like to do, who I like to be with."
Earlier, the couple said they were separating 'amicably'
In September last year, the once much-in-love couple released a statement confirming their divorce. It read, "After four wonderful years of marriage, we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children."
