'Metal Lords': 'GoT' makers turn to metal music for next
After winning hearts with medieval lore in Game of Thrones, the HBO hit show's makers are now devoting their focus to metal music. GoT writer and co-producer, DB Weiss, is taking on the music genre with a Netflix movie that tells a coming-of-age story in Metal Lords. The streaming service dropped the trailer for the film recently and here's its breakdown.
What does the trailer show us?
The nearly two-minute clip begins with high-schooler Kevin (Jaeden Martell) desperately trying to find a source to channel his love for metal music. But the only other metalhead in school seems to be Hunter (Adrian Greensmith), an outlier with eccentric tastes. They aim to achieve fame by winning "Battle of the Bands" but for that, they need a bassist, who they can't find.
Kevin and Hunter need new band member
In search of their bassist, Kevin discovers a girl, Emily (Isis Hainsworth), who plays the cello. While Kevin seems to like her (even romantically), Hunter straight up locks horns with her; and this conflict makes up for quite a big chunk of the narrative. Other than this, the metal band, of course, has the responsibility of reigniting teenagers' interest in this genre of music.
The movie hits Netflix on April 8
Weiss, who has written and co-produced Metal Lords, collaborated with the Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello on this. Morello will be serving as the executive music producer. David Benioff, co-creator of GoT, along with Weiss, is also associated with this project as an executive producer. Directed by Peter Sollett, the film will hit Netflix on April 8.
Did you know? 'Metal Lords' was ideated long before 'GoT'
Interestingly, Weiss ideated Metal Lords much before GoT. According to Billboard, he penned a different script for the film in the early 2000s when he met with Greg Shapiro (co-producer of Metal Lords). "When [Benioff] and I started working on the Thrones...around 2006...the plan was, if and when Thrones fell apart...I'll go and do my metal movie with [Shapiro]." Luckily, everything worked out.
