Vijay's 'GOAT' stays strong at box office, enters ₹400cr club
Thalapathy Vijay's latest film, GOAT (Greatest of All Time), has entered the ₹400 crore club, making it the second highest-grossing movie in the actor's career. The film, which was released on September 6, achieved this feat after earning ₹6.3 crore and ₹7 crore on Monday and Tuesday respectively. However, the film's performance in the Telugu and Hindi markets has been less impressive.
'GOAT' earns ₹227 crore at domestic box office
GOAT has grossed approximately ₹226.6 crore at the domestic box office, with the lionshare coming from Tamil Nadu. The film is reportedly only the third movie to cross the ₹200 crore mark in its home state, after Ponniyin Selvan 1 and Leo. Despite its success, GOAT's occupancy on Tuesday was reported to be 34% in Tamil and just 18% in Hindi.
'GOAT' becomes 6th Tamil film to cross ₹400 crore
GOAT is now the sixth Tamil film to cross the ₹400 crore mark at the worldwide box office (its current haul is ₹407cr). The other films to achieve this feat are 2.0 (₹745 crore), Leo (₹606 crore), Jailer (₹604.5 crore), Ponniyin Selvan 1 (₹488 crore), and Vikram (₹414.5 crore). It still lags behind Vijay's previous film, Leo, which holds the top spot in his career earnings.
Director attributes film's underperformance to IPL team loyalty
In a recent interview, GOAT director Venkat Prabhu attributed the film's underperformance in Telugu and Hindi markets to his and the crew's loyalty to the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Chennai Super Kings (CSK). "We are all CSK fans - it's in our blood and we can't deny that," he said. "Maybe, it's because of the CSK connection that this movie didn't appeal much to Telugu and Hindi audiences."
