Glen Powell in negotiations for J.J. Abrams's next
Glen Powell, known for his roles in Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You, is reportedly in early talks to star in J.J. Abrams's upcoming directorial venture. Interestingly, the actor and director are already collaborating on the soon-to-be-released documentary The Blue Angels. Reports suggest that Powell is Abrams's top choice for the lead role in the feature, although no official decision has been made yet.
Powell is hot property after back-to-back hits
Powell's career has been on an upward trajectory following his successful roles in Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You. His performances have garnered the attention of esteemed filmmakers and production companies. Sony's Motion Picture Group CEO Tom Rothman lauded Powell, stating, "Glen is the classic example of talent meeting opportunity." He attributed the success of Anyone But You to both the power of cinema and Powell's "truly charismatic screen presence."
Powell's kitty is filled with versatile projects
While we don't know if he'll sign up with Abrams, the Set It Up star's schedule is already jam-packed. It includes Netflix's Hit Man, which he co-wrote with director Richard Linklater, and Edgar Wright's reboot of The Running Man for Paramount. He will also star in Universal's potential summer blockbuster Twisters. Additionally, Powell will feature in a Hulu comedy series Chad Powers, and feature in John Lee Hancock's film Monsanto, expected to be a highlight at the Cannes Film Festival.

Abrams, primarily recognized for his recent producing work, will be directing again for the first time since 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. His future projects include producing Flowervale Street, a mystery-thriller starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor, set for a May 2025 release. Coming to The Blue Angels documentary, it's about Navy pilots, which will have a limited one-week run in IMAX theaters starting May 17 before becoming globally available on Amazon Prime Video from May 23.
