#GameOfThrones: HBO won't make another spin-off till prequel starts off
Game of Thrones is a pop culture sensation and fans cannot wait for the final season to air. However, with the HBO show coming to an end, the channel has to think about the future. Although they already have a prequel lined up, HBO's programming president opened up about the future of Game of Thrones content on the channel. Here's more on what he said.
HBO won't pick up other spin-offs till current project begins
The president, Casey Bloys, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter saying that despite there being several Game of Thrones spin-offs, HBO would not be picking any up until the currently approved prequel begins. Bloys said, "We're looking at an early summer shoot date for the pilot and we're excited... and then we'll think about if there's any other one that we want to make".
Current prequel starring Naomi Watts, is being made
For those unaware, HBO has a prequel in the works starring Naomi Watts. It is set thousands of years before the events of Westeros unfolded in Game of Thrones. It would show the transition from the Golden Age of Heroes to the darkest hour, presumably, the creation of White Walkers. The story will delve into the history of Westeros and explore the legendary Starks.
Despite show's popularity, HBO is more than 'Game of Thrones'
Bloys continued that Game of Thrones has portrayed a great world. However, he didn't want HBO to become 'a network that airs just Game of Thrones or Game of Thrones prequels'. Although he expressed an interest in exploring the universe created by George RR Martin, in the books on which the show is based, Bloys wanted to be careful and not overdo GoT content.
Keeping wide and varied content is HBO's future
Bloys is completely against HBO being defined by just one show. To that extent, he has tried to keep the 'slate full and varied'. Notably, HBO has a host of exciting content currently, and several new shows coming up on their channel. Some of the acclaimed HBO shows include Westworld, Sharp Objects, True Detective. Among the upcoming shows that have us excited is Watchmen.
