Biggest mystery of Game of Thrones: Who is Azor Ahai?
Game of Thrones has a multitude of prophecies both in the books and the show. One of the most well-known is the prophecy of Azor Ahai (similar to the Prince that was Promised). It states that thousands of years ago, there was a 'chosen one' who ended the long night with his magical sword, Lightbringer. So, who is Azor Ahai? We decode.
There are three parts of this prophecy
First, the prince was born amidst salt and smoke and had some connection with dragons. Second, he had a sword, Lightbringer with which he ended the long night (a seemingly endless winter, centuries ago). Third, he forged Lightbringer with the blood of someone he loved the most: his wife, Nissa Nissa. It is said that he'll return as Lord of the Light (R'hllor's) champion.
Is Azor Ahai same as the Prince that was Promised?
Yes and No. There are two major continents in the world of Game of Thrones: Westeros and Essos. Both the prophecies say the same things about Azor Ahai's reincarnation but with minor differences (mostly geographical). People from Asshai (near Essos) believe in Azor Ahai while the ones living in Westeros believe in a 'Prince' that was Promised. So, who is this reincarnation?
Azor Ahai might be 'no one'
When Arya trained with faceless men, she lost her very identity and personality. She became no one, ready to become anyone. Now that she has already destroyed the Night King and his army (rather unceremoniously) with a Valyrian Steel dagger, it is quite possible that she is Azor Ahai. That is, unless GoT throws a surprise twist and darkness (Night King) is reborn.
The man on his path to redemption
During the Loot Train battle, Jaime Lannister tried to kill Daenerys and was saved from dragon fire by Bronn. There were smoke and salt (since he fell into water) and as a lot of theories suggest, he is out there to kill the one he loves the most, his sister Cersei. He checks all the right boxes and could very well be Azor Ahai.
The mother of dragons, the Princess that was Promised
Daenerys has dragons. She has already lost Khal Drogo, the one she loved the most; and was reborn on the funeral pyre amidst salt (tears of Mirri Maz Duur) and smoke. She doesn't have Lightbringer but it can be argued that Jon Snow is her metaphorical sword. It is also said that the Prince would be born of the line of King Aerys II.
The song of 'Ice' and 'Fire'
Jon Snow is a Targaryen from the Mad King's line. He is a gallant warrior and carries a Valyrian Steel blade. He lost his love, Ygritte in battle and in case Dany becomes the new Mad Queen, he could be the one to kill her as well. The true song of 'Ice' (Lyanna Stark) and 'Fire' (Rhaegar Targaryen), Jon might really be Azor Ahai.
