Fawad Khan's 'Legend of Maula Jatt' won't release in India
Contrary to previous reports, the Pakistani film The Legend of Maula Jatt won't be making its way to Indian theaters, reported ANI. This decision aligns with a long-standing policy that has kept Indian films off Pakistani screens since 2019. The film was initially slated to release on October 2, but according to the recent update, the plans seem to have changed. The movie is headlined by Fawad Khan.
Political strain between Ind-Pak is the reason
On Saturday, ANI posted on X (formerly Twitter), "Pakistani film 'The Legend of Maula Jatt' is not being permitted in cinema theatres in India." "It is learned that the decision has been taken as Indian films have not been permitted in Pakistan since 2019." To recall, previous reports stated that the film will only be available in Punjab.
Earlier, Raj Thackeray had warned against film's release
The film has faced vehement opposition from political leaders in Maharashtra. A few days ago, Raj Thackeray, head of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), tweeted that his party would not allow the movie to be screened in Maharashtra under any circumstances. He questioned why Pakistani films are allowed to be released in India and urged the government not to permit this film's release anywhere in the country.
Shiv Sena leader questioned need for Pakistani films in India
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anand Dubey also expressed his disapproval of the film's release in India. In a video, he asked, "What is the need to release a Pakistani film in India? Do we not have artists in our country? Do we not make films here?" Moreover, Ameya Khopkar, the head honcho of MNS Cinema Wing, warned of a "strong agitation" if the release happens and urged folks from other states to join the boycott too.
A brief history of ban on Pakistani artists in India
The ban on Pakistani artists working in India kicked off after the Uri terror attack in 2016. This led to Fawad's role being reduced in the film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, directed by Karan Johar. Mahira Khan, who also stars in The Legend... also worked in the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Raees (2017), but hasn't returned to Indian cinema since.
