Famed Bollywood actress Shakila of 'Hatim Tai' fame dead
Yesteryear leading lady Shakila, who has appeared in cult movies like 'Hatim Tai' (1956) and 'CID' (1956), passed away yesterday after a heart attack. She was 82. 'The fairy queen of Indian fantasies' was rushed to a well-known hospital near Bandra, but couldn't get admission and had to be taken to a Juhu hospital. The funeral was held this morning at Mumbai's Mahim cemetery.
A glimpse into a legendary life
Shakila used to stay in Gobind Mahal on Marine Drive. She moved to Bandra after her daughter Meenaz killed herself at the South Bombay ocean front building. The friendship between Shakila, Waheeda Rehman, Jabeen Jalili and Nanda was legendary. In the later years, Saira Banu and Asha Parekh were her regular contacts. "May Allah grant her Jannat. Aameen," posted her nephew Nasirr Khan.
A plethora of hit movies and songs
Apart from 'Hatim Tai' where she was seen as the ethereal fairy, Shakila appeared in Guru Dutt's Aar Paar (1954), Raj Kapoor's 'Shriman Satyawadi' (1960) and Shammi Kapoor's 'China Town' (1962). She moved audiences with her performance in hit songs like "Babuji Dheere Chalna" and "Neend Na Mujhko Aaye". The last time she appeared on the big screen was in 'Ustadon Ke Ustad' (1963).
