Iconic 'Home Alone' house listed for sale once more!
The renowned suburban residence featured in the 1990 Hollywood holiday classic Home Alone—helmed by Chris Columbus—is back on the market! Located at 671 Lincoln Ave. in Winnetka, Illinois, the house is currently listed for a whopping $5.25M. Even now, countless families incorporate the film into their holiday rituals, returning to the McCallister residence that 8-year-old Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) bravely defended against two bumbling burglars determined to wreak havoc.
'Home Alone' house's previous sale and current price
This marks its second time up for sale since it gained fame as a movie filming location. The last time this iconic house was on the market was in 2012 when it sold for $1.585M—a significant drop from its initial asking price of $2.4M. Now, nearly a decade later, the red brick Georgian house is listed at an impressive $5.25M, showcasing a substantial increase in value over the years.
The house's historical significance and filming details
The house, dating back to 1920, first gained recognition beyond the North Shore in 1974 when its newly-redone kitchen was featured in Better Homes & Gardens magazine. John and Cynthia Abendshien were the residents during the filming of Home Alone. While most interior scenes were filmed on a sound stage, some scenes were shot inside the actual house. The decor seen in the movie wasn't chosen by the Abendshiens but by filmmakers to provide a holiday-oriented feel.
'Home Alone' house's popularity and recent use
Beyond its fame from Home Alone, the property has established itself as a popular tourist attraction, with visitors often snapping photos of its exterior. The house also made brief appearances in an episode of F.R.I.E.N.D.S and was also featured in the 2019 Netflix series, The Movies That Made Us. In December 2021, Airbnb rented out this iconic property for one night. The current owners purchased it from the Abendshiens in 2012 and are now selling it themselves.
Meanwhile, you can make your own miniature version of house!
The popularity of the house extended even to LEGO, which allows fans to construct their own miniature version of the iconic residence with a building set boasting a whopping 3,955 pieces. While Disney+'s 2021 remake of Home Alone, titled Home Sweet Home Alone, takes place in a different, more luxurious mansion with a fresh cast of characters, the beloved original house from the 1990 film remains cherished and fondly remembered by fans.
