Landmark ruling
An overview of the case
To recall, the Shah Bano case was a landmark case in India regarding Muslim women's rights to receive maintenance after divorce.
In 1978, after her husband divorced her under Islamic law, Bano sought financial support through Indian law.
The Supreme Court ruled in her favor in 1985; however, the decision was opposed by some Muslim groups.
Later, the government passed a law that effectively overturned the ruling.
