Emmys: John Oliver's emotional dog tribute interrupted by music
John Oliver's HBO series, Last Week Tonight, clinched the Emmy for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night (Monday IST). However, his acceptance speech took an unexpected turn when he was interrupted by orchestral music while paying tribute to his family's recently deceased dog. Despite the interruption, Oliver managed to finish his speech with a humorous twist.
'I want to thank the silly odd dog...'
During his acceptance speech, Oliver expressed gratitude toward his late pet, saying, "In particular, I want to thank the silly odd dog." "We have the most fantastic dog, and she was at our wedding and she got us through the pandemic. She was with us for two pregnancies..." However, as he continued his tribute, orchestral music began playing in an attempt to wrap up his speech.
Oliver's humorous response to orchestral interruption
Despite the orchestral interruption, Oliver humorously responded, "Perfect choice of music." He then continued his tribute, saying, "We had to say goodbye to her. I feel like Sarah McLachlan right now. She was an amazing dog." As the music persisted, he playfully retorted: "F_ you! There you go." He concluded his speech by dedicating the award not just to his late pet but all dogs.
