Pro-Gaza protesters delay 76th Primetime Emmy Awards
The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, held on Sunday (Monday IST) at the Peacock Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, were disrupted by pro-Gaza protesters. Approximately 35 demonstrators gathered near the LA Live complex, waving flags and shouting chants. Some even took to the streets, obstructing traffic and delaying the arrival of attendees. This protest is reminiscent of similar disruptions at high-profile events earlier this year, including the Oscars and a fundraiser featuring Joe Biden and Barack Obama.
Protesters expressed solidarity with global causes
The protesters carried signs with messages such as "No justifying the murder of children," referencing Israel's military campaign against Hamas in Gaza following an attack on October 7, 2023. Other signs displayed hashtags like "#FreePalestine #FreeSudan #FreeCongo," indicating support for various international issues. The demonstration took place at the intersection of S Figueroa and W 18th Street, a key route for Emmy participants exiting the Harbor and Santa Monica Freeways.
LAPD ensured smooth passage for Emmy attendees
Despite the disruption, a law enforcement source assured that such scenarios were anticipated and would not delay the ceremony. Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers were present at the scene to ensure Emmy attendees could pass through smoothly. However, an official LAPD spokesperson declined to comment on the situation when approached by Deadline. Among those who managed to navigate past the protesters was Dallas Goldtooth, star of Reservation Dogs, who sported a red Artists4Ceasefire pin on the red carpet.
