'Emergency': Frustrated with CBFC delays, Kangana threatens legal action
Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut has claimed that her upcoming film Emergency is yet to receive certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film, which is scheduled for release on September 6, has been facing calls for a ban from various quarters. In a recent interview, Ranaut expressed her determination to fight for the film's release, even if it means going to court.
Ranaut alleges 'drama' over 'Emergency' certification
Speaking to IANS, Ranaut said, "My film got cleared from the censor. And the day we were about to get the certificate, a lot of people did a lot of drama." "There are a lot of issues with the censor as well. So I hope it gets released. Because suddenly, as they say, the carpet is pulled from someone's feet. I was very confident that I got the certification. But now they are not giving me my certificate."
'You can't change history and scare us by threats'
Ranaut said, "It's getting too late. I hope the film comes on time. Otherwise, I am determined to fight for it. I am determined to even go to court to protect my film. To save my right as an individual. You can't change history and scare us by threats." To note, the film is based on the controversial period of emergency imposed by former PM Indira Gandhi during 1975-1977.
Ranaut defends film's depiction of historical events
Ranaut defended the film's depiction of historical events, stating, "We have to show the history. An almost 70-year-old woman was shot 30-35 times in her house... Someone must have killed her. Now you want to show it... Because apparently, you think you can hurt someone. But you have to show the history." She further asserted that she will not be silenced by threats or intimidation. "We are not afraid of guns."
'Emergency' faces ban calls in Telangana
Emergency has been facing calls for a ban, particularly in Telangana. An 18-member delegation from the Telangana Sikh Society, led by former IPS officer Tejdeep Kaur Menon, has accused the film of portraying Sikhs as terrorists and anti-nationals. Additionally, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Akhal Takht have also demanded an immediate ban on the film, alleging that it attempts to "character assassinate" Sikhs.
'Emergency' not Gandhi's biopic, clarifies Ranaut
Emergency, announced by Ranaut in 2021, is a political drama that the actor clarified is not a biopic of Gandhi. Ranaut has not only played the lead role in the film but has also directed it. The film features an ensemble cast including Anupam Kher, Milind Soman, Mahima Chaudhry, and Shreyas Talpade among others. It was earlier scheduled to release in June.
