Born on May 2, 1972, in California, Johnson attended schools in New Zealand, North Carolina, Connecticut, Hawaii, Tennessee, and finally Pennsylvania. He was part of his high school football, track and field, and wrestling teams. He aspired to become a football player but went undrafted in the NFL draft. After graduating from the University of Miami, he joined the Canadian Football League. However, he failed to make the starting team. This led Johnson to professional wrestling.
