Drew Carey stands with striking writers, reveals funding their meals
Renowned television host Drew Carey recently revealed he had paid for meals at popular restaurants Bob's Big Boy and Swingers for striking writers last summer. The disclosure came during his appearance at the Writers Guild Awards, where he was honored. Holding a plate of food on stage at the Hollywood Palladium, Carey expressed surprise at the cost of his charitable act.
Charitable act surpassed Carey's expected costs
Carey admitted to the audience that he was taken aback by the cost of his generosity and stated, "I didn't know it was going to cost me so much money." He recalled a similar act during a previous strike that resulted in a $67,000 bill. This time around, he expected a similar amount but was surprised when some writers chose shakes and desserts, significantly increasing the total bill.
The host remained unfazed by rising costs
Despite concerns from his accountant and publicist about the escalating costs, Carey remained steadfast in his decision to support the writers. When asked if he would consider cutting back on expenses, he responded firmly, "Nope, I already said I would. It's the right thing to do." His commitment to doing what he believes is right underscores his unwavering support for the striking writers.
Carey acknowledged writers' role in his success
In his speech, Carey downplayed his charitable act and instead focused on expressing gratitude towards the writers. He stated, "I really appreciate all the thanks and stuff... I don't think I should get that much credit for doing the right thing." He credited the writers of The Drew Carey Show for his success, acknowledging that they had made him a millionaire. Carey concluded by thanking all writers for their work and wishing them well.
