'Entirely' different vision for 'Doctor Strange' sequel revealed
Scott Derrickson, the acclaimed director of Doctor Strange, recently revealed that his original vision for the Marvel film's sequel was "entirely" different from the final cut of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Answering a fan's tweet, the filmmaker announced his original vision. Derrickson initially led the project before parting ways with Marvel Studios due to creative differences. This departure paved the way for Sam Raimi to step in as director.
Derrickson's horror-infused vision clashed with Marvel
Derrickson, known for his contributions to the horror genre, had planned to incorporate more horror elements into the sequel. However, this concept did not align with Marvel Studios's plans, leading to his exit from the project. This creative divergence was confirmed by Doctor Strange writer C Robert Cargill during an interview around the film's release.
Derrickson's commitment to original script despite departure
Despite leaving Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Derrickson remained committed to his script co-written with Cargill, the scribe had told Cinema Blend. The Sinister director even considered delaying another project, The Black Phone, to focus on it. Recalling a conversation with Derrickson, Cargill shared that Derrickson had said, "Dude, I have to make this movie. It's gotta be my movie, I have to do this."
'The Black Phone' sequel is coming in the meantime
Derrickson may not have gotten the chance to explore horror elements in Marvel films but we can soon expect to see him dip his toes into all things sinister and dark. Reports have hinted that a sequel to the Ethan Hawke-led The Black Phone has been greenlit by Universal and Blumhouse. An October 2023 report said the film was likely to see light in 2025. Adding fuel to the reports, Hawke recently showed keen interest in starring in the sequel.
