Discovery's OTT service launched in India, priced at Rs. 300/year
Leading infotainment network Discovery has barged into the OTT space with its own content streaming app - Discovery Plus. The platform offers content across a range of genres and is said to be specifically curated for viewers in India. Plus, its annual subscription comes at an extremely tempting price of Rs. 300. Here's all about the offering.
Offering factual, real-life content covering 40+ genres
Available for Android, Discovery Plus is touted to be the first-ever streaming service relying on factual content. Unlike other largely scripted OTT platforms, Discovery Plus offers actual, real-life entertainment videos spanning across more than 40 genres, including Science, Adventure, Food, Wildlife, and Lifestyle. The content covers everything, from Premium Discovery titles and short videos to documentaries and India-specific originals.
Indic languages also supported
In order to draw more takers of the app, Discovery is offering the new platform in eight different languages, including English, Hindi, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu. You can find the content in any of these languages to experience a localized infotainment experience, something that the other streaming services, including Netflix, have also started focusing on.
Sourcing from various Discovery-owned and partner channels
The content of the app is sourced from a number of channels, including Discovery Channel, Discovery Science, Discovery Turbo, Cooking Channel, Travel Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, BBC, Food Network, HGTV, DIY Network, Motortrend, and Vice. Of this, some content, including shows on the Indian Army and wildlife, is kept exclusive to premium subscribers while other videos are completely free to access (like Hotstar).
Then, there is tempting subscription, reward on offer
To gain access to the premium content of Discovery Plus, you will have to take a monthly or annual subscription. The monthly plan has been priced at Rs. 99 while the yearly subscription comes at Rs. 299. Plus, you can also get a discount of up to 100% on the annual subscription by paying through the Google Pay app.
2.5 crore infotainment content consumers targeted
With all this, Discovery hopes to bring the strong base of 2.5 crore 'core TV infotainment consumers' across tier-1 and tier-2 towns to the new OTT app. To note, the launch also comes ahead of the inclusion of National Geographic's content in Hotstar via Disney++.
