Diana Hayden pregnant for the second time, using frozen eggs
Former Miss India Diana Hayden is pregnant with twins, conceived from eggs she had frozen three years ago. In January'16, she became a mother for the first time; at that time too she had conceived from an egg frozen eight years ago. Diana was in her 40s when she had delivered her first child. Why do women freeze eggs?
According to a survey, women often freeze their eggs when they wish to delay childbearing process due to some unavoidable reasons. One of the most common reasons for not bearing a child in their 20s is because one doesn't want to shift focus from the career. Besides, a majority of women freeze eggs because they don't have a partner.
How are eggs frozen?
Eggs are frozen using either a slow-freeze method or a flash-freezing process known as vitrification. In order to redeem eggs for freezing, a patient undergoes a hormone-injection process known as -vitro fertilization. Once the eggs are recovered through the process, they are frozen for a fixed period of time before they are defrosted, fertilized and transferred to the uterus as embryos.
What is the egg freezing cost in India?
As per reports, infertility specialists in Mumbai charge around Rs. 50,000 for egg freezing. There can be additional charges for maintenance of those eggs. Frozen eggs are stored at 196 degrees Celsius and can survive up to 10 years without disturbance. However, researchers say out of every 10 frozen eggs, 7 are likely to survive the thaw and 5-6 are expected to fertilize.
