'Assam frustrated with illegal Bangladeshis': Devoleena Bhattacharjee defends Assamese Muslims
Television actor Devoleena Bhattacharjee recently defended the Muslim community in Assam, her home state, in a Twitter spat with journalist Rana Ayyub. The argument started when Ayyub accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of turning the state into a "communal cauldron." Bhattacharjee responded by stating that the issues in Assam are due to illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, not local Muslims.
Ayyub accuses Sarma of inciting hate against Muslims
Ayyub had tweeted, "The state of Assam under Himanta Biswa is turning into a communal cauldron. Stoking naked hatred against Muslims with his speeches, legitimizing conspiracy theories, introducing discriminatory laws. Where is the pushback to his hate politics?" Bhattacharjee responded by saying Ayyub should "stay away" if she doesn't know anything about Assam and its problems.
'Assamese Muslims are far educated and sensible than you...'
Bhattacharjee wrote, "Assamese Muslims are far educated and sensible than you and your leaders and no one has any issues with each other. So don't even try it. @himantabiswa and in fact, the whole of Assam is worried and frustrated with illegal Bangladeshis."
Bhattacharjee often comments on social, political issues
Bhattacharjee is known for commenting on social and political issues, particularly those related to Assam.
