Villeneuve confirms 'Dune 3' will be his last in franchise
Director Denis Villeneuve has announced that the third installment of the Dune franchise will be his last. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Villeneuve clarified that Dune 3 is not a trilogy and will have its own identity. "It's important that people understand that for me, [the first two movies] was really a diptych. It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book," he said.
Villeneuve open to other directors taking over 'Dune' franchise
Despite his decision to leave the Dune universe, Villeneuve expressed his desire for the franchise to continue under a different director. "Listen, if Dune: Messiah happens, it will have been many years for me on Arrakis, and I would love to do something else," he stated. "I think that it would be a good idea for me to make sure that, in Messiah, there are the seeds in the project if someone wants to do something else afterwards."
'Dune 3' to feature aged-up cast
The third Dune movie, titled Dune Messiah, is set 12 years after the first book. This means the film's cast, including Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, will need to be aged up. Villeneuve confirmed he has a plan for this, but did not divulge any further details. The director has previously expressed his interest in making a third Dune movie, which he said would be his last in the franchise. The movie is in the scripting phase right now.
Zendaya expresses eagerness to continue with 'Dune 3'
Zendaya, one of the franchise's stars, has shown enthusiasm for continuing with Dune 3. "Would we be down? I mean of course," she said when asked about making another Dune movie. "Any time Denis calls it's a yes from me. I'm excited to see what happens." She added, "It's just anticipation. Whenever he is ready... So I'm respecting that and waiting until he's ready."
