Role of a lifetime: Deepika to play Draupadi in 'Mahabharata'
Deepika Padukone has announced that her next big project will be an adaptation based on the epic, Mahabharata. However, this time, the tale of Mahabharata will be narrated from the point-of-view of Draupadi, who shall be portrayed by Deepika. Furthermore, she will also serve as a co-producer of the film, along with Madhu Mantena. Meanwhile, Deepika is currently awaiting release of Chhapaak and '83.
The movie is slated to release on Diwali 2021
The movie, which will be the first part in a planned series, is slated to release on Diwali 2021. Expressing her excitement about the grand project, Deepika said, "I'm absolutely thrilled and honored to be playing the role of Draupadi. I truly believe that it is the role of a lifetime." Deepika has previously appeared in period drama films like Padmaavat and Bajirao Mastani.
"Telling Mahabharata from fresh perspective will be interesting and significant"
Explaining the twist in tale, Deepika further said, "While the Mahabharata is popularly known for its mythological tales and cultural influence, many of life's lessons are also derived from the Mahabharata but most often from its men." "Telling it with this fresh and new perspective will not only be interesting but also very significant," she added.

Explaining what sets this film apart, co-producer Mantena said, "While we have all consumed Mahabharata all our lives, the uniqueness of our film is seeing the same story from the point-of-view of Draupadi, who's one of the most significant heroines in our country's cultural history." Mantena, who was earlier part of the now-dissolved Phantom Films, has previously produced films like NH10, Masaan, Super 30.

Talking of how Deepika adds to the film's prospects, Mantena said, "Deepika is not just the biggest Indian actress today but someone who can take this narrative across borders. If it weren't with her, we wouldn't be making this film on such an ambitious scale."
Meanwhile, Deepika to soon feature in 'Chhapaak' and '83'
Separately, Deepika is set to star in Meghna Gulzar-directorial Chhapaak, also starring Vikrant Massey. The film is based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. It is scheduled to release on January 10, 2020. She will then be seen opposite hubby Ranveer Singh in Kabir Khan's upcoming sports drama film, '83, which is based on India's 1983 Cricket World Cup glory.
