Deepfake of Scarlett Johansson goes viral; actor demands AI regulations
What's the story
Hollywood actor Scarlett Johansson has urged the US government to restrict artificial intelligence (AI) after an unauthorized deepfake video featuring her and several other Jewish celebrities began circulating online.
The widely circulated video on social media showcases an AI-generated version of Johansson alongside over a dozen other well-known Jewish celebrities seemingly opposing rapper Kanye West, now Ye.
The rapper recently went on an antisemitic rant on X, even launching Swastika T-shirts.
Statement
'AI-powered hate is a far greater threat than any individual'
In a statement to PEOPLE, Johansson condemned what she called "the misuse of AI, no matter what its messaging."
She said, "It has been brought to my attention by family members and friends that an AI-generated video featuring my likeness...has been circulating online and gaining traction."
"I am a Jewish woman who has no tolerance for antisemitism or hate speech of any kind. But AI-powered hate is a far greater threat than any individual."
AI danger
Johansson warned about the broader threat of AI
Johansson further expressed her concern about the broader implications of AI misuse.
She said, "There is a 1000-foot wave coming regarding AI that several progressive countries, not including the United States, have responded to in a responsible manner."
"It is terrifying that the US government is paralyzed when it comes to passing legislation that protects all of its citizens against the imminent dangers of AI."
Past incidents
Johansson's previous encounters with AI misuse
Notably, this isn't the first instance Johansson has fallen prey to unauthorized AI use.
In November 2023, she threatened legal action against a company for unauthorized use of her AI-generated likeness in an ad, which was later removed.
In May 2024, she once again found herself shocked and angry to hear a voice eerily similar to hers being used as the "voice" of OpenAI's ChatGPT system, Sky.
