Deepak Dobriyal came into the limelight after his portrayal of Rajan Tiwari aka Rajju in ‘Omkara’ for which he won a Special Jury Award at the 2007 Filmfare Awards. Born on September 01, 1975, in Uttarakhand, India, Dobriyal moved to Delhi with his parents at the age of five. He studied at Govt. Boys Senior Secondary School, Begumpur. He then graduated from Delhi University through correspondence. His passion for theater made him choose acting as a career. His theater career began in 1994. Dobriyal collaborated with eminent directors like Arvind Gaur at the beginning of his career. He spent six years with Gaur’s Asmita Theater before switching to Pt. N. K. Sharma’s Act One. He made his feature film debut in Vishal Bharadwaj’s ‘Maqbool’ in 2003. He received his big break with ‘Omkara’ in 2006. His next big outing was as Pappi Tiwari in ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ in 2011. He played the same role in its sequel ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ in 2015. Dobriyal won the 2016 International Indian Academy Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role for his performance in ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns.’ He has also received three Filmfare Awards nominations (2016, 2018 and 2021).
