Hugh Jackman eyes Supporting Actor Oscar for 'Deadpool & Wolverine'
Marvel Studios's latest blockbuster, Deadpool & Wolverine, is aiming for recognition at this year's awards season. The film, directed by Shawn Levy and featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, is set to compete in major awards groups. Disney plans to submit the film for consideration at the Golden Globes in comedy categories. Reynolds's performance as Wade Wilson/Deadpool will compete for a spot in the actor (comedy or musical) category.
Jackman's Wolverine to compete in supporting actor category
In a surprising move, Jackman's reprisal of Logan/Wolverine will be positioned in the supporting actor races across all key awards shows, reported Variety. This includes the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Critics Choice, and even the Academy Awards. The film is also expected to secure a spot in the Golden Globes's recently-introduced Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category, which celebrates critically acclaimed and highest-grossing films.
'Deadpool & Wolverine' to vie for technical nominations at Oscars
In addition to acting categories, Deadpool & Wolverine will also aim for nominations in technical categories at the Oscars. These include production design, sound, and visual effects. The original Deadpool (2016), directed by Tim Miller, was a critical and box office success, earning over $780M worldwide. It received two Golden Globe nominations and was recognized by major industry guilds including the Directors Guild of America, Writers Guild of America, and Producers Guild of America.
Reynolds and Jackman bring award-winning pedigree to film
Reynolds, an Emmy winner, is one of Hollywood's most bankable stars. In addition to starring in Deadpool & Wolverine, he also produced the film alongside Levy, Kevin Feige, and Lauren Shuler Donner. Jackman brings an impressive awards pedigree to his resume with a Tony Award, an Emmy, a Golden Globe win, and an Oscar nomination for Les Miserables (2012). The ensemble cast of Deadpool & Wolverine includes Emma Corrin and Morena Baccarin, among others.
