'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow' set for summer 2026 release
Warner Bros./DC Studios has confirmed that their feature adaptation of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will be released on June 26, 2026. The film, directed by Craig Gillespie and featuring Milly Alcock in the lead role, is the second project under the new DC Studios led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The first project from this team is Gunn's Superman movie, scheduled to premiere on July 11, 2025.
'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow' is based on Tom King's comic
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is an adaptation of the 2022 comic book series by Tom King, with illustrations by Bilquis Evely. The screenplay for the big screen has been penned by Ana Nogueira. The plot follows Supergirl and her canine companion, Krypto the Superdog, as they journey through space to escape Superman's shadow. This version of Supergirl presents a different perspective on the character than audiences are accustomed to.
Gunn spoke about new take on the Supergirl character earlier
Gunn, at a DC Studios press conference last year, explained the unique take on the Supergirl character. He stated, "We see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton." The DC honcho added that this version of Supergirl is "much more hardcore; she's not exactly the Supergirl we're used to seeing."
Alcock to play Supergirl in another project before standalone movie
Alcock, known for her breakout performance on HBO's House of the Dragon, has been cast as Supergirl. She secured the role after a successful screen test on the set of Gunn's Superman, even wearing the iconic Supergirl suit. Before her big-screen debut in Woman of Tomorrow, Alcock is likely to appear as Supergirl in another DC project. This marks a significant milestone, as Warner Bros. last released a Supergirl movie back in 1984 with Helen Slater playing the title role.
