#ComicBytes: The best and most reliable sidekicks in DC Comics
The best sidekicks to ever exist have had their origins in DC Comics. Some of them supported their heroes throughout their lives, some went on to become heroes on their own, while others changed along the way. When it comes to sidekicks, DC has had an exponentially better record than its rival Marvel. Here are five of the best sidekicks in the DC Universe.
The woman who suffered a great deal for being herself
Barbara Gordon, daughter of Commissioner of Gotham, James Gordon, was the Batgirl everyone loved. She was talented, outspoken, and had a keen sense of justice. In The Killing Joke storyline, Joker shot her because of her connection to Batman. Her spine was paralyzed and as a result, her career as Batgirl was over! Not one to give up, she returned as Oracle, Batman's girl-in-the-chair.
A brilliant sidekick with a messed up past
If there is one duo that can rival the iconic Batman and Robin, it's Green Arrow and Speedy. His real name is Roy Harper and with Arrow, he has defeated some powerful villains. His most horrible villain, however, was the drug addiction he suffered from in his past. Green Arrow helped him out and vowed to end the drug problem once and for all.
Not all great sidekicks have to be heroes!
This well-known sidekick actually belongs to the chaotic villainous world. She is Joker's loyal confidant/admirer, Harley Quinn. The whole world but Harley fears Joker's psychotic tendencies. Her feeling toward 'Mr. J' can be described as one-sided love but in truth, it's something else (maybe Stockholm Syndrome). She has often taken the blame for Joker's crimes but of late, has become her own person.
What is Stockholm Syndrome?
Stockholm syndrome is a condition which causes hostages to develop a psychological alliance with their captors as a survival strategy during captivity. This condition has been used a storyline several times in pop culture and movies.
This cutest sidekick isn't a man or a woman
Krypto is actually a Dog created by Superman's father Jor-El to serve as his companion. He might look like an ordinary dog but in reality, Krypto has the same powers as Superman. He even has his own secret identity- Skip! The Hound of Steel is a perfect sidekick to the Man of Steel. Not to mention, he's cuter than any other sidekick!
The greatest sidekick, Robin isn't a person but an identity
The first Robin, Dick Grayson went on to fight crime on his own as Nightwing. The second one, Jason Todd, met a sad end by Joker but returned as the anti-hero Red Hood. The third, Tim Drake was arguably the smartest of them all and later assumed the identity of Red Robin. The current Robin is Batman's real son, Damian Wayne.
