David Dhawan challenges OTT actors to prove worth in theaters
Veteran filmmaker David Dhawan recently criticized actors and films on over-the-top (OTT) platforms, challenging them to prove their worth in theaters. The filmmaker, who has built a legacy with over 40 films to his name, recently spoke with Arbaaz Khan about the rise of OTT platforms and their effect on the allure of theatrical releases. He expressed disappointment with actors who play it safe by choosing OTT over theatrical releases.
'Why do you want to play so safe with OTT?...'
Dhawan raised questions about the safety net provided by OTT platforms during the candid conversation and the inability of actors to gauge the success of their projects. "I tell this to every actor. Why do you want to play so safe with OTT where you don't even know how much a project has worked?" "Theater mein aao, apni aukaat dikhao tum (Come to the theater and show your worth)," he added.
Dhawan asserted real validation comes from theaters
Dhawan stated that real appreciation and validation for an actor's work come from theaters rather than OTT platforms. "Anyone can do OTT. There's a safety mesh over there," he added. The director further claimed that actors are apprehensive about theatrical releases due to fear of media scrutiny. He reminisced about the audience's applause and cheers for dialogues in theater-released films, stating there's nothing like it.
Dhawan's last directorial venture was released on Prime Video
It's interesting to note how Dhawan's last directorial venture Coolie No. 1 featuring Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan was released on Amazon Prime Video due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. Reports indicate that Dhawan has already begun shooting for his next film titled Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai at an undisclosed location. The film reportedly stars son Varun, Mrunal Thakur, and Sreeleela in key roles. However, an official confirmation regarding the project is pending.
