David Cross reveals why Paramount+ scrapped 'Guru Nation'
We have been robbed! Paramount+ has decided to cancel the upcoming docu-comedy series Guru Nation, which was set to feature David Cross and Bob Odenkirk as rival cult leaders. The decision was made by the streaming service's marketing and analytics department, revealed Cross. The show, still in its preliminary stages of development, had sparked interest among four networks before Paramount+ was chosen as the partner, only eventually to be dropped by them.
Cross and Odenkirk had planned an eight-episode limited series
Cross and Odenkirk, known for their work on Mr. Show, were not only the stars but also the creators of the now-shelved show. They had planned an eight-episode limited series. The duo had even written the first four episodes and a detailed bible for the remaining four. Cross shared during an episode of Andrew Santino's Whiskey Ginger podcast that he told the network, "Here's the story, here are the characters, and here's how it would work."
Paramount+ decided not to proceed due to this reason
Despite their comprehensive pitch, Paramount+ decided not to proceed with Guru Nation. Cross added, "And then they said no, which was weird because it was what we pitched." "If the marketing department doesn't have the imagination to take a preexisting idea, and figure out [...] how to sell it, then they can say no." He added that this incident is an "ugly reminder" that "they have all the f*cking power!"
Meanwhile, take a look at their popular projects
Odenkirk has gained worldwide fame for his roles in projects such as Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, Mr. Show with Bob and David, and The Brothers Solomon. In his long career, he has racked up multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. As for Cross, he is best remembered for playing Tobias Funke in the sitcom Arrested Development, which also starred Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Michael Cera.
