Daler Mehndi convicted for two years; gets bail in minutes
Punjabi pop singer Daler Mehndi and his brother Shamsher Singh were today convicted in an illegal immigration case by a Patiala Court and given a jail sentence of two years. However, they have now been granted bail by the court. The case dates back to 2003 when Mehndi and his brother were accused of running an illegal immigration ring.

As many as 35 charges have been leveled against them
Mehndi and his brother were accused of illegally sending people abroad disguised as members of a dancing troupe and charging a hefty "passage fees" in return. It was alleged that they took two troupes to the USA in 1998 and 1999 during the course of which 10 persons were "dropped off" illegally. Soon, a complaint was filed by a petitioner named Bakshish Singh.
Bakshish had alleged that the brothers defrauded him
A resident of Balbehra village, Bakshish had alleged that the brothers demanded lakhs of rupees from him for sending him to the US, but did not do so. The Patiala Police had raided Mehendi's office in Connaught Place, New Delhi and had seized documents which included the case file of those who had paid him for illegal passage to the US.
