Industry influence
'Drishyam' franchise's impact on Malayalam cinema
The Drishyam franchise began with its first film in 2013, which became the highest-grossing Malayalam movie at the time, shattering box office records.
Its massive success led to multiple remakes, including the Tamil version starring Kamal Haasan, the Telugu with Venkatesh, and the Hindi adaptation featuring Ajay Devgn.
Over the years, the film's rights have been sold for adaptations in various languages, including Sinhalese, Mandarin, Korean, and even Hollywood.
Sequel success
'Drishyam 2' left room for 3rd installment
Speaking to India Today, Mohanlal emphasized Drishyam's significance for Malayalam cinema. He said it "gave a great uplift to the Malayalam industry," and was watched by audiences across India during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Eight years after Drishyam's release, its sequel Drishyam 2 premiered on Amazon Prime Video and was just as successful. The film ended on a cliffhanger, hinting at a third part.
Mohanlal had said the franchise has become "a blessing for the industry, [even] internationally."
