Maharashtra may form committee to probe casting couch in Bollywood
Following the recent revelations of the Justice Hema Committee report on sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry, the Maharashtra government is reportedly considering setting up a similar committee, reported Bollywood Hungama. This proposed committee would investigate the pervasive issue of casting couch and sexual assault/harassment in Bollywood. If this happens, it will be a watershed moment in the industry.
'This must be probed at the highest level'
Veteran actor Asha Parekh has voiced her support for the proposed committee. She told BH, "This must be probed at the highest level. The safety of women at their workplace must be the highest priority for the government." A prominent Hindi producer-director, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed hope that this investigation would bring to light the actions of influential figures who were previously overlooked during the MeToo movement.
'Biggest of heads will roll this time'
The anonymous producer-director added, "Some years ago that whole MeToo thing happened in Bollywood. But what was the result? Only the small fish were taken into the net." "The really big players and that includes a multi-content tycoon producer and an A-list hero known for his clean image, both of whom paid multi-crores to the accusers to hush up allegations against them. This time the biggest of heads will roll."
'Many changes should be brought in film sector'
Jeo Baby, the director of the critically acclaimed film The Great Indian Kitchen, also commented on the issue. He said, "All registered complaints should be treated very seriously. Many changes should be brought in the film sector with the support of the state government." He also congratulated Women In Cinema Collective (WCC) for their efforts in addressing this pervasive issue. Now, it remains to be seen how the committee to safeguard actors in Bollywood will shape up.
