Coldplay breaks world record for highest-attended music tour
What's the story
British rock band Coldplay, fronted by Chris Martin, has broken the world record for the highest attendance in music tour history with their ongoing Music of the Spheres World Tour, Guinness World Records noted.
The band accomplished the record-breaking feat by surpassing Taylor Swift's previous record set during her The Eras Tour.
However, Swift's globe-trotting Eras Tour remains the highest-grossing tour at $2 billion.
Indian leg
Coldplay's historic concerts in India contributed to record
The band's concerts in Mumbai and Ahmedabad, India, contributed greatly to this new record.
According to Guinness World Records, over the weekend of January 25 and 26, Coldplay staged the largest stadium show in Ahmedabad with over 2,23,000 fans attending over the two nights.
On January 26 alone, they had an audience of 1,34,000 attendees at their Ahmedabad concert—their biggest ever.
With over 10.3 million tickets already sold, there are still eight months left on their tour.
Record clarification
Coldplay acknowledged this but didn't claim highest concert attendance record
Despite their record-breaking tour attendance, Coldplay clarified on social media that they haven't broken the world record for the highest number of people at a single concert.
The band acknowledged Italian singer Vasco Rossi's 2017 concert in Modena Park, Italy, which drew 2,25,000 attendees.
They also mentioned British rock and pop singer Sir Roderick David Stewart's 1994 concert in Rio de Janeiro that attracted a crowd of 3.5 million people.
Comparison
Coldplay's performance in India compared to Diljit, Justin Bieber
Before their historic Ahmedabad concert, Coldplay's biggest audience was in Sydney, Australia, where 83,000 people attended the concert.
Meanwhile, before this, the largest ticketed concert crowds in India were those of singers Diljit Dosanjh and Justin Bieber, both drawing 50,000 attendees.
While Honey Singh claimed his 2020 concert in Haldia drew two lakh people, this figure was never independently confirmed.
