A24's 'Civil War' to debut in Chinese cinemas
Alex Garland's dystopian thriller, Civil War, is set to make its theatrical debut in China on June 7. This marks a significant milestone as it is the first A24 production to be officially screened in Chinese cinemas. The film was acquired by Huahua Media, with Alibaba partnering for the local release. Civil War has already achieved an A24 best launch of $25.7M and crossed the $100M global mark within its first month.
'Civil War' achieves global success
The film premiered globally at SXSW and opened in the North American circuit in April. It has been successful overseas, opening at No. 1 in several key markets including Brazil, France, and Spain. As of Sunday, the total worldwide gross was $108.9M, with $43.7M coming from the international box office. The film features Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Nick Offerman, Stephen Henderson, and Wagner Moura.
'Civil War' plot and Chinese market reception
Civil War narrates a journey across a dystopian America in the future, following a team of military-embedded journalists racing against time to reach Washington DC before rebel factions descend upon the White House. Despite Chinese audiences' growing preference for local films over US productions, some recent major titles have managed to break through, such as Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Other studio movies due for release in China include Disney/Pixar's Inside Out 2 and Illumination/Universal's Despicable Me 4.
