'Chhaava' director apologizes to Ganoji-Khanoji families amid ₹100cr defamation threat
What's the story
Laxman Utekar, the director of the popular film Chhaava, has apologized to the descendants of Maratha warriors Ganoji and Kanhoji Shirke.
The family had accused the film of negatively portraying their ancestors and threatened to file a ₹100cr defamation lawsuit.
In his apology, Utekar clarified that only the first names of Ganoji and Kanhoji were used in Chhaava without any reference to their surname.
Film controversy
'Chhaava' plot led to family's outrage
The film Chhaava, featuring Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, shows Ganoji and Kanhoji as traitors who joined hands with Mughal emperor Aurangzeb against the Maratha ruler.
After the film's release, Laxmikant Raje Shirke, a 13th-generation descendant of Ganoji and Kanhoji Shirke, slammed the makers for "misinterpretation of historical facts" which he said tarnished his family's reputation.
An official notice was issued to Utekar on February 20, urging him to make necessary changes.

Utekar then reportedly contacted Bhushan Shirke, another descendant, to apologize for any unintentional offense the film may have caused.
He stressed that the surnames and village names of Ganoji and Kanhoji weren't revealed in Chhaava.
"Our intention was not to hurt the sentiments of the Shirke family. I sincerely apologize if Chhaava caused any discomfort," Utekar reportedly told Bhushan.
Nevertheless, the Shirke family has warned of statewide protests if their concerns aren't addressed satisfactorily.

Released on February 14, 2025, under Maddock Films, this historical saga has been lauded by critics largely.
