CBI files closure report in Sushant Singh Rajput's death case
What's the story
The Central Bureau of Investigation has filed a closure report in Sushant Singh Rajput's death case, nearly four years after assuming the investigation from the Bihar Police.
The report, filed in a special court in Mumbai, says that no evidence was found to indicate that anyone had driven Rajput to suicide.
This has effectively cleared his former girlfriend, Rhea Chakraborty, and her family of any involvement in his death.
Rajput was found dead in his apartment on June 14, 2020.
Investigation details
CBI's investigation and findings
The CBI had taken over the probe from the Bihar Police in August 2020, after Rajput's father leveled accusations against Chakraborty. The agency also probed Chakraborty's accusations against Rajput's family.
The CBI's conclusions were based on the crime scene and forensic examination of seized items, including a laptop, hard disks, a camera, and two mobiles.
Separately, a forensic team of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) had earlier said Rajput (34) was not murdered but died by suicide.
Charges dismissed
Allegations against Chakraborty and her family
In his complaint to the Bihar Police, Rajput's father KK Singh alleged that Chakraborty and her family members siphoned off his son's money and abetted his death.
However, these charges have been dismissed by the CBI due to a lack of evidence.
The agency had recorded statements from Chakraborty and others in Rajput's close circle, besides collecting the actor's medical records.
Next steps
Court to decide on CBI's closure report
Now, the special court in Mumbai will decide whether to accept CBI's closure report or order further investigation by the agency.
This comes amid the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding Rajput's death, including a recent appeal by Satish Salian, father of Disha Salian, seeking a probe into his daughter's death.
Salian was Rajput's former manager and died on June 8, 2020, allegedly after falling from the 14th floor of a building in Malad, Mumbai.
Timeline recap
Rajput's death: A timeline
Initially, the Mumbai Police investigated the case. However, the CBI took over it after his father filed an FIR in Patna.
Both Chakraborty and her brother were arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau in a Rajput-linked drugs case in 2020.
In October 2024, the Supreme Court dismissed an appeal by the Maharashtra government challenging the Bombay High Court's order quashing look-out circulars issued against Chakraborty, her father, and her brother.
