'Captain Marvel' wins big at box-office in launch weekend
Captain Marvel, the latest Marvel Studios' flick, has lived up to the hype, and its humongous box-office collections prove the point. The first-ever female-led Marvel Cinematic Universe film has garnered amazing returns at the domestic as well as global box-office, over the course of its first weekend. Here's all about it.
The numbers game
Reportedly, the Brie Larson-starrer, which happens to be the first Marvel-Disney joint superhero film, released on March 8 (which is apt, given it is International Women's Day), and shattered the box office in its launch weekend. It has garnered a total of $455 million worldwide ($153 million in the US), scoring the largest-ever global box-office debut for a woman-led film.
And, what about India earnings?
At the Indian box-office, the Marvel film earned Rs. 13.01 crore (net) on its release day. It capitalized on the good start with a collection of Rs. 14.01 crore on day two. On Sunday, the film bagged around Rs. 13.5 crore. The total India earnings stand at slightly over Rs. 40 crore by the end of the first weekend.
'Captain Marvel' is suffocating 'Badla' at the Indian box-office
The Hollywood import is giving stiff competition to the same-day domestic release Badla, which has been directed by Sujoy Ghosh. However, good word-of-mouth has rescued the Indian film from a poor start. The Amitabh Bachchan-Tapsee Pannu starrer started with Rs. 5.04 crore on Friday, followed by Rs. 8.55 crore and Rs. 9.61 crore on Saturday and Sunday respectively (Total: Rs. 23.2 crore).
Slow Sunday because of India-Australia match
Interestingly, reports suggest that the business was less than expected on Sunday because of the blockbuster cricket match between India and Australia.
More about the latest Marvel outing
The comic-book adaptation by Marvel Studios chronicles the story of an extraterrestrial Kree warrior, who is on a mission to end the intergalactic battle between her people and the evil Skrulls, while struggling to uncover the secrets of her past life as US Air Force pilot Carol Danvers. The film has managed largely positive reviews from the critics as well as its global audiences.
Connection with 'Avengers: Endgame'
Interestingly, Captain Marvel will also be seen in the much-hyped conclusion film of the Avengers series- Avengers: Endgame, which is slated to hit the theaters on April 26.
