Emma-Yorgos's 'Kind of Kindness' receives glowing standing ovation at Cannes
Reuniting after their successful collaboration on Poor Things (2023), Oscar-winning actor Emma Stone and director Yorgos Lanthimos joined forces once again for Kinds of Kindness. The film, exploring themes of sex cults, cannibalism, and debauchery, mesmerized audiences at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival. Following its screening on Friday, the audience erupted into a standing ovation that lasted over four minutes and 30 seconds. The applause continued even after Lanthimos and cast members had departed from the venue.
Film is a compilation of unsettling stories
Kinds of Kindness is a compilation of three different stories, with actors playing multiple roles. Stone aside, the film also features Willem Dafoe, Jesse Plemons, Alwyn Chau, Mamoudou Athie, and Margaret Qualley. The movie unfolds with captivating performances such as Chau's portrayal of a cultist involved in an unsettling initiation ceremony, Stone's dangerous driving sequences, cannibalistic culinary scenes, and graphic violence throughout. Despite its shocking content, the absurdist comedy was well-received by viewers.

'Kinds of Kindness' set for release by Searchlight Pictures
Lanthimos is familiar with the Palais des Festivals, having premiered films like The Lobster (2015) and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) at Cannes in the past. However, his more recent works, such as The Favourite (2019) and Poor Things, made their debut at the Venice Film Festival, which proved to be a successful platform for launching their awards season campaigns. Kinds of Kindness, set to be released by Searchlight Pictures, will make its debut on June 21.
