'Worked so hard': Anasuya Sengupta reacts to historic Cannes victory
Anasuya Sengupta has etched her name in gold in the annals of the 77th Cannes Film Festival. She recently became the first Indian artist to clinch the Best Actress award in the Un Certain Regard segment. The award was bestowed upon her for her stellar performance in The Shameless, a film directed by Bulgarian filmmaker Konstantin Bojanov. The film also stars Omara Shetty and Mita Vasisht.
Sengupta's emotional reaction to the win
In an exclusive interview with HT City, Sengupta shared her feelings about the historic win. She stated, "I couldn't believe it was happening! But as I shakily walked to the stage and stood with artists I have admired...my heroes, it felt oddly natural to be welcomed with so much authenticity and love by them." Her victory has drawn attention and applause from all corners of India, including Bollywood actors like Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, and Arjun Kapoor.
All the hardwork finally feels 'worth it'
She added, "I am amazed at the love pouring in from so many back home, it makes me proud to make everyone proud." "I have worked so hard for so long, and I'm here to keep doing it more and more. It all feels worth it when I look back, and all the pieces are wonderfully coming together for me finally," she added.
The making of 'The Shameless'
The Shameless's plot revolves around a sex worker who escapes from a Delhi brothel after killing a police officer. Bojanov was tempted to work on the film due to his fascination with India and the influence William Dalrymple's book Nine Lives had on him. Shot in Nepal over two months and one night in Mumbai, the film does not have an Indian release date yet.
Take a quick look at her career
Before her breakthrough role in The Shameless, Sengupta had a varied career in the film industry. She began as a supporting actor in Anjan Dutta's Madly Bangalee (2009), then moved to Mumbai in 2013 where she worked as a production designer on projects such as Sanjeev Sharma's Saat Uchakkey (2016) and Srijit Mukherji's Forget Me Not (2021).
